Planning and Its Importance in Achieving a Goal
Planning is a vital stage when starting out a project. Setting the roadmap for the desired destination is an important stage in any endeavor.
I must admit that I had previously overlooked the importance of setting a plan. I used to jump right into an activity without careful analysis and preparing a plan. As expected, it would usually result in a debacle. My failures due to my own carelessness helped me learn the importance of formulating a plan.
WHY DO WE NEED TO PLAN?
The amount of time we spend on planning will certainly help in attaining a goal. No wonder, big companies spend more time in the planning stage.
Written below are the key reasons why we need to plan. Give time to read and understand the following to help you understand why planning is crucial in attaining your goals.
1. Planning Sets Direction
The last thing that we want to happen is to find out that we could no longer revert the actions that we made. Poor planning would usually bring us to situations where we are prompted to quit. Remember, we might not live long enough to learn all these things by committing mistakes one after another.
2. Planning Saves Time
If there is one thing that we can no longer recover once lost, it is the time. Time is an important element and this is one of the very reasons why we need to plan. If you have a clear plan and you know how much time you need to allocate for every step you need, you can be able to manage your time accordingly.
3. Reduce Risks
We are aware that in any endeavor, there are risks involved. However, by creating plans, we can somehow minimize or completely eliminate the risk and achieve the goal we expect.
4. Planning Saves Money
Identifying the set of actions needed can help us manage not only the time but our money as well. One good example is when we plan to purchase everything we need for one week. We have a list and buy everything. This particular scheme will not only save time, the effort, but also our money.
5. You Are In Control
You know when to do the next move. Everything has been set for a definite time. Everything will fall in the right place.
6. You know What to Expect
There is no time for guesswork. We know what will come up next and we can formulate the next step ahead of time.
7. Reduces Stress
If we are uncertain of the end result, we come to a point of overthinking which can cause too much stress and anxiety. However, with proper planning, we can be assured of success, thus, we can enjoy life while executing the plan.
STEPS IN PLANNING
Oftentimes, I would discover that there were certain things which I should have done before the current stage of the project. Unfortunately, it would be impossible for me to rectify the error which often results in the failure of the project. Here are the steps in planning that we should be aware of.
1. Setting a Vision
Vision refers to our dreams. Under what condition do we see yourself at a given time? Do you see yourself earning a 6-figure income after 1 year, 5 years? Our vision should be specific and attainable.
2. Make Necessary Research
Sufficient data is needed in to create an effective plan. Depending on our goal, we need to know what are the things we need. Do we need a demographics of a certain place? How about the competitors? The list of the needed data depends on the goal that we are aiming to achieve.
3. Know What Are TheTasks Needed
How are we going to achieve the vision? What are the things to be done? Knowing the tasks that we need to perform should be included in the plan. Do we need to outsource the tasks or employ additional strategies?
4. Determine the Required Resources
Just like any business, we need to invest time, effort, money and skills. Prior to the implementation, we should determine the materials we need. Do we have enough savings for the project? Or do we need to outsource?
5. Set a Timeline
We have to set a deadline for every task that we identified. Achieve a great result by setting a considerable amount of time for the project. How long do we need to work on the project?
6. What Tools Do We Need For Monitoring?
How are we going to monitor our achievement is an important factor in planning. Since we identified the process and we know what to expect, we can set a monitoring scheme in order to set a barometer so as to assess if we are on the right track.
7. Setting an Alternative
Though we created a plan, there are instances when the outcome does not happen the way we expect it to be. Having a Plan B is a vital thing in planning. If something unexpected happens, we can divert to our alternative plan.
8. Review and Finalization
Review and finalization of our plan are necessary before the execution. We have to recheck and adjust if necessary.
This is the time of the actual implementation of the plan. Whether you are alone or working with a group, having a clear plan will help you complete the desired work in time.
10. Monitoring and Evaluation
Once everything has been implemented, we can now start the monitoring process. If everything is going as planned, we can expect the success of the project.
Monitoring while implementing the project can also help if ever issues will be encountered along the process.
